Steven Kaufman, Sunrise Technologies’ Principal Consultant, has over 25 years of experience in sustainable energy and environmental protection.  He started his career working in the solar industry in Massachusetts, installing and maintaining solar water heating systems.  Following graduate school in the mid-1980’s, he headed three projects sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to develop emissions trading policy and other mechanisms to reduce compliance costs in acid rain control programs.  From 1990 to 1996 he worked with Enersol Associates and Soluz Inc. planning and raising funds to implement PV-based rural electrification projects in the Caribbean and Latin America.  With Sunrise Technologies, Steve has completed a range of assignments for commercial, non-profit, and government clients.  Examples include evaluating and facilitating carbon market participation for renewable energy and energy efficiency applications, leading an assessment of PV-based electrification in developing countries as a climate protection activity, and playing a key role, with the Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands, developing a framework to facilitate off-grid and mini-grid renewable energy projects in the Clean Development Mechanism.  In 2002 Steve founded Green Markets International, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing climate protection and sustainable energy.  Steve served as Green Markets' Executive Director for six years, helping to expand carbon market access for small projects, and leading an initiative to advance financial and commercial innovations for solar energy applications that was nominated for a World Clean Energy Award.  In addition to his work with Sunrise, Steve is Managing Director of Clean Asset Partners Corporation.  Steve holds a BA in Economics from Drew University and a MA in Energy and Environmental Studies from Boston University.
